How to restore MS Dynamics AX 2012 R3 Contoso Demo Data

Hello Guys!

We have setup MS Dynamics AX 2012 R3 system on our environment. We are working on an article which shows the procedure to install AX 2012 R3. Till then, we have written a quick article which shows the steps to restore the Contoso Demo Data for 2012 R3.

  1. Download the “Contoso Demo Data” from PartnerSource
  2. Download the “Test Data Transfer Tool (beta)” for AX 2012 from InformationSource
  3. Install the “Test Data Transfer Tool (beta)” by double clicking AX2012TestDataTransferTool.msi and follow on screen instructions and complete the setup. For details click here.
  4. Extract the demo data by double clicking DynamicsAX2012R3DemoData.exe
  5. Stop the AOS service.
  6. Start the command prompt by typing “cmd” in the Run dialog.
  7. Navigate to the tool’s folder which located in “Program files (x86)”
  8. Type the following in command prompt “dp import c:\r3dd MicrosoftDynamicsAX

restore ax 2012 r3 demo data

The “Remaining” count decreases and will ultimately become “0”. This process takes a couple of hours to complete.

We encountered few errors in the process but, nonetheless everything worked fine. See the screenshot below which shows the Contoso Demo Data loaded on AX 2012 R3.

  1. Hi, if the database and AOS both are in different servers,
How to import demo data using Test data transfer tool?

Can you please give me suggestions?
    I’m using a command – “dp import C:\DynamicsAXR3DemoData AXR3_Data ”

but i’m not able import the data using aboue command.

    1. In your scenario you should run this on the DB server. You are missing the Server name parameter in the command. After the path mention the name of the DB server [in my case “MicrosoftDynamicsAX”].

  2. The command
dp.exe import “c:\r3dd” MicrosoftDynamicsAX not working and give me the below error

    Cannot access the database MicrosoftDynamicsAX
    No database found

    Please give me some help

    1. Hi Mushi,

Replace “MicrosoftDynamicsAX” with your actual SQLServer name and this should resolve your issue.

      1. Still I have same error. I repeatedly reinstall the SQL Server 2012 Standard on Windows 2012 and Windows 2008 R2 servers. Run the above command but no luck. Please help me to Import the demo data into AX 2012 R3 Database. If there is any pre-requisite of it please specify.

        Thanks in Advance!

        1. Hi Mushi,

Did you get your problem resolved? I created an empty database and ran the tool … to no avail. I had previously recreated an 2012 RTM Demo database (which I no longer needed) and assigned the DP action to that one … and it did work! However, my data still does look ‘ancient’.
Can you help me out here?

  3. Hi All,

Is it possible for someone to provide me “DynamicsAX2012R3DemoData.exe” and “Test Data Transfer Tool”? I am an independent software engineer and does not have access to CustomerSource or PartnerSource. Can someone upload it to some location from where I can download it please. Its a very very sincere request to all of you.

    Thanks & Regards.

  4. Hi

You have to place 2 different paths.

    1. Is the extracted tool file which will be located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Test Data Transfer Tool (Beta)
    2. The data extracted patch where exactly you have extracted the data.

    in CMD :

CD C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Test Data Transfer Tool (Beta) ” You Data Extracted Path” and the AX DB Name.

FYR please go thru the attached Link.
